Announcement of New Library Director

"The Trustees of the Burnham Library are pleased to announce that Kelly Tomaseski will be our new Library Director. She will begin her new duties on July 1, 2013. Kelly currently works as the Director of the Town of Esopus Library, Port Ewen, NY. She has been in that position since 2005. Before that, she was the Youth services Librarian at the same library, starting in 1999. She received her Masters of Library Science from the State University of New York, Albany in 2003.

The position of Director of the Burnham Library was advertised locally, regionally and nationally. We received 27 applications, and we interviewed five candidates. The finalists came into town for a day long interview process which included separate interviews with the Library employees, the Trustees and Town Manager, and a public talk, filmed by LCATV, which can be viewed from their website. The Trustees drew on comments from the Library staff and the public in making our final decision.

We encourage the citizens of Colchester (library and non-library users) to visit Kelly after her arrival to discuss not only what we do well, but what we can do better, and how we can best develop the future of the Burnham Library. - The Burnham Library Trustees"

Seeking Book Sale/Donation Volunteers

The Friends of the Library are seeking help for their upcoming book donations and book sale. The book donations take place on Saturdays (May 25-June 22), from 9 am-12 pm, while the sale is June 28-30. Stop by the library or call 879-7576 to sign up.

There were two errors on the back of our May Calendar:

  • Young Adult Film Crew is actually on Monday, May 13 at 6:30 pm.
  • Intergenerational Dessert Book Discussion is actually on Monday, May 20 at 6:30 pm.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Book Donations

We'll be accepting books for the June book sale on Saturdays, starting on May 25. Each Saturday (May 25-June 22), from 9 am-12 pm, we'll be accepting books at the old Fire House (between Claussen's and Union Memorial School). Drop off your books - we will take hardcover and paperback, as well as DVD's, videotapes, and CD's. Please, no periodicals, encyclopedias, or textbooks. The sale itself will take place on June 28-30.

Wednesday Preschool Music

Starting Wednesday (Apr. 17) our weekly music program is shifting to 1 pm (rather than 12:30 pm). We will also be welcoming a new musician, Mr. Chris, into the library. He'll be bringing music and fun every Wednesday!

DCF Book List

The Dorothy Canfield Fisher (DCF) Children's Book Award list for 2013-2014 is now available. Since 1957 the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award has honored quality literature for children. Each spring, a committee selects 30 books to comprise the DCF Master List. Students then read at least five books from the Master List and vote for their favorite titles the following spring. From this link at the Department of Libaries, you can see the master list of titles, as well as download a checklist or bookmark:
