Help Your Neighbors at the Library
During the Holiday season, the library is collecting items for those in need. For the Colchester Food Shelf, we are collecting non-perishable food, especially pasta cause, peanut butter, fruit jellies, hearty soups, canned fruit, and non-refrigerated juices. For the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program, we have our annual collection of warm socks and mittens (which go on our Christmas tree); they are also seeking school supplies (notebooks, pens, and pencils), hats, scarves, blankets, and towels. We will be collecting for both groups until the end of the month.
Book Drive for Holiday Baskets - Extended
Update - The Book Drive has been extended until Thursday, Dec. 12. The Burnham Memorial Library's Young Adult Advisory Board works in cooperation with Colchester-Milton Rotary on their annual Holiday Basket project. While Rotarians collect food and other essentials for approximately 250 local families, the YA Board collects books for the children and teens in each family. Our goal is to make certain that every child and teen on the list gets to feed their minds with something good to read. If you would like to participate, please donate a new or like-new book for kids or teens. Drop boxes are also available at Malletts Bay School, Colchester Middle School, and Colchester High School.
Help with Vermont Health Connect
Do you have questions about Vermont Health Connect, and its new options for finding health insurance? Speak one-on-one with a trained Health Connect Navigator. We'll be scheduling appointments on Tuesdays; in-depth (1 hour) sessions will be scheduled from 2-5 pm, and shorter (15 min) sessions from 5-6 pm. To setup an appointment, call us at 264-5660, and chooses Option 3 and then Option 1 to speak to the front desk.
Self Defense Class with Colchester Police
The Library is working in concert with the Colchester Police Department to put on a Rape Aggression Defense class for women. The RAD program is a comprehensive, women-only course that focuses on awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and then progresses on to the basics of hands-on defense. The course is taught by nationally certified RAD instructors and provides each student with a workbook. The six-week course takes place on Thursdays at 6-8 pm, from January 9 till February 13, 2014. It will take place at the Colchester Meeting House, next door to the library. The class is free, and is open to women 13 years of age and up. To sign up, please contact Corporal Jaime L. Bressler at 264-5555, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
